Waterlogging due to rain in Delhi

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted cloudy weather and light rain in Delhi on Saturday (August 24). However, a red alert has been issued in Gujarat. At the same time, a warning of heavy rain has been issued in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Goa, West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. There is an orange alert in all these 12 states.

Heavy rain lashed different parts of Delhi on Friday, leading to waterlogging in several areas and disruption of traffic. According to the weather department, the rain caused a marginal drop in the maximum temperature. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said rain lashed various parts of south, east, north-west and central Delhi. After the rain, the maximum temperature was recorded at 31.2 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, while the maximum temperature on Thursday was 36.6 degrees Celsius. The humidity level at 5:30 pm was 80 per cent.

Slight relief in Delhi

The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies and light rain with thunderstorms on Saturday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be 34 degrees and 27 degrees Celsius respectively. On Saturday, the capital will remain in the ‘green zone’, that is, no alert has been issued, but a day after that it will change to ‘yellow alert’. In their forecast for the next seven days, meteorologists have predicted light to moderate rain and thundershowers.

Record rainfall in August

Due to rain on Friday, roads were flooded in many parts of the city, affecting traffic. According to IMD data, August this year is expected to be the rainiest month in the national capital. So far, 269.9 mm rainfall has been recorded here, which is the highest in the last decade. According to IMD data, till August 23, Delhi received 274 mm of rain, which is more than the maximum rainfall recorded in August 2014.

How will the weather be in the coming days?

  • A red alert has been issued for Gujarat, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on August 25. At the same time, heavy rains are also expected in Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Goa, Maharashtra and West Bengal. Heavy rains may also occur in northern Indian states and Kerala.
  • A red alert has been issued in parts of Gujarat on August 26. Heavy rains are expected in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Goa. States like Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Bihar are also likely to receive heavy rains.
  • An orange alert has been issued for parts of Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat on August 27. Apart from this, heavy rains are also expected in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tripura and Mizoram.
