Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike urges environmentally friendly Ganesh festival celebrations, prohibiting Plaster of Paris (POP) idols. The corporation, pollution control board, and police are to conduct surprise inspections of idol production units, seize POP idols, and impose penalties for violations, with legal action as needed.

Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath has instructed officials to prepare thoroughly for Ganesh Chaturthi within BBMP jurisdiction, highlighting the importance of precautionary measures and proper arrangements during a meeting at the Corporation’s Central Office Hall-01.

“For Ganesh idol installations, permissions must be granted promptly through 63 sub-division offices, which should be equipped with dedicated centres for applications. BBMP, police, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM), and fire department officials should be appointed quickly, and their details should be uploaded to the BBMP website.

Necessary actions must be taken to ensure that permissions are granted within the stipulated time frame. Kalyanis near water bodies must be thoroughly cleaned, and staff should be assigned for Ganesh immersion. Additionally, arrangements should be made for barricading, CCTV, electrical islands, trained lifeguards, and cranes”, the Chief Commissioner said.

Inspection and safety measures
BESCOM officials were directed to inspect electricity lines along immersion procession routes and implement safety measures to prevent accidents. It is essential that street lights on electricity poles are operational, and the BBMP must address and repair any road damage or potholes along these routes. “For safety and emergency response, ambulances should be positioned near the immersion sites, and health staff must be designated to provide first aid in case of emergencies.

Fire brigade vehicles should be arranged as a precautionary measure to handle any fire-related incidents. Staff assigned to oversee the immersion activities at Kalyani near water bodies must adhere to a specific dress code. The police department is also tasked with deploying home guards to maintain order and prevent any unwanted incidents. Temporary mobile tanks should be established at strategic locations, to facilitate the immersion of Ganesh idols”, Nath added.
