Srinagar: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi arrived in Srinagar on Thursday to hold crucial discussions with party workers and finalise strategic alliances for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.

Reports indicate that Gandhi’s primary objective was to negotiate an alliance with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC). The Congress party aims to contest 40 seats out of the 90 in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, following a strong performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections. In response, Omar Abdullah, leader of the JKNC, has reportedly proposed allocating 25 seats to Congress as part of the potential alliance.

Earlier, Tariq Hameed Karra, the newly-appointed Jammu and Kashmir Congress president, emphasized the party’s openness to forming a pre-poll alliance with parties opposed to the BJP’s policies. Karra criticized the BJP for allegedly undermining the region’s “communal fabric” and reiterated Congress’s commitment to fostering unity among Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs in the Union Territory.

Regarding the National Conference’s manifesto, which includes the restoration of Article 370, Karra reiterated Congress’s stance. The Congress Working Committee (CWC) had condemned the “unilateral, brazen, and undemocratic” abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories by the Centre in August 2019.
