Kolkata rape-murder case, who is Sandip Ghosh

Ever since the controversy over the heartbreaking news of the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has escalated, the name of the former principal of this institute, Sandip Ghosh, has also been in the headlines. The CBI has been questioning him continuously for the last five days. This heinous incident came to light on August 9, which shamed the entire country. However, the allegations against Sandip Ghosh are nothing new, he has had a long history with controversies. But he has been badly trapped in this controversy and is under the scanner of the CBI.

Questions raised on Sandeep Ghosh

After the body of the doctor was found in the seminar hall of the government hospital, questions have been raised in both the Kolkata High Court and the Supreme Court over the role of Sandip Ghosh in the incident. The courts also questioned the Mamata Banerjee government’s surprising move to appoint him as the principal of another medical college just hours after his resignation as the head of RG Kar Medical College. Sandip Ghosh’s rise to the limelight has brought shocking allegations of corruption and mismanagement to the fore. The opposition alleges that the state government supported Dr Sandip Ghosh despite corruption charges against him.

He became the principal of the place where he studied

Sandip Ghosh completed his schooling from Bongaon High School near Kolkata, cleared the Joint Entrance Examination for admission to medical and engineering courses and studied at RG Kar Medical College. Sandip Ghosh completed his MBBS in 1994 and became an orthopedic surgeon. After this, he continued to progress and became the principal of the college from which he studied in 2021. Prior to this posting, he served as the vice-principal at Calcutta National Medical College.

Has a long association with controversies

Barely two years after assuming the post of principal, Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College, filed a complaint with the State Vigilance Commission levelling serious allegations against Dr Sandip Ghosh. The complaint accused Dr Ghosh and others of wasting government money, ignoring financial rules, nepotism in selecting vendors and taking bribes from them and irregularities in the recruitment of contractual staff. Ali alleged in his complaint that he had tried to raise the issue earlier too, but West Bengal Health Recruitment Board chairman Dr Sudipta Roy had threatened to sack him.

The complaint was made in July last year. At that time, Ali was the Deputy Superintendent of the State Health Recruitment Board. However, no clear action was taken against Dr Sandeep Ghosh in the last one year and he continued to be the principal of RG Kar Medical College.

The heinous incident of rape and murder happened on 9th August

On the morning of August 9, the body of a 31-year-old female doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College, sending shockwaves across the country. It was revealed that the doctor had been raped. As the horrifying details of the case emerged, a number of allegations were levelled against Dr Sandip Ghose. He denied these allegations and said that he had decided to step down as principal because he “cannot tolerate humiliation.”

While he resigned, a few hours later, he was made the principal of the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. This led to a huge controversy as protestors and opposition parties said he was ‘rewarded’ after such a horrific incident took place at the campus he was in charge of.

How Sandeep came under the purview of investigation

The response of Dr Sandip Ghose and the hospital administration after the doctor was found dead was severely criticised in both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. Questioning why a case of unnatural death was registered, the High Court said, “When the deceased victim was a doctor employed in the hospital, it is surprising why the Principal/Hospital did not lodge a formal complaint. This, in our view, was a serious lapse which gave rise to suspicion.”

The High Court also questioned the “urgency” of the state government in appointing Dr Ghosh as principal of another college just hours after his resignation. The Supreme Court also pulled up Dr Ghosh and the hospital administration for the delay in filing the FIR and also questioned his appointment so soon after he resigned.

Dr Sandip Ghosh is now being questioned by the CBI in connection with the case. He appeared before the agency officials for the sixth time. He has been questioned for more than 60 hours in the last five days. He is also being investigated for corruption by the state government and for allegedly revealing the identity of the rape-murder victim.
