IMD weather forecast: Heavy rainfall predicted in Punjab, Maharashtra, other states

The weather department has sounded an orange alert in six districts of Kerala and a yellow alert in the remaining districts for Wednesday.

New Delhi: Heavy rainfall is likely to lash northeast India and several other states including Tamil Nadu and Kerala during the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted.

“The low pressure area over central parts of Bangladesh is likely to cause isolated very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over Northeast India during next 2 days. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely over Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep during next 2 days,” the IMD said.

The weather department has sounded an orange alert in six districts of Kerala and a yellow alert in the remaining districts for Wednesday. An orange alert means very heavy rain (6 cm to 20 cm) while a yellow alert indicates heavy rainfall between 6 and 11 cm.

Several parts of the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad received heavy rainfall on Tuesday that left several areas waterlogged and also caused traffic congestion.

In Delhi, early morning showers led to waterlogging and traffic snarls in several areas yesterday. The Met office has predicted generally cloudy skies with light rain for Wednesday.

After a dry spell since early August, rains made a comeback in Mumbai on Tuesday morning, bringing respite from heat and humidity. Hyderabad too received rainfall yesterday. The Met Centre of IMD said heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal districts of Telangana till 8.30 am of August 21.

Rain forecast for these states

Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan during this week. Rainfall is also predicted in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa and Gujarat till August 26.

“Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Madhya Pradesh, madhya Maharashtra on 21st and during 23rd – 26th; Chhattisgarh during 21st – 25th; Goa during 21st – 26th; Gujarat region on 21st, 25th & 26th August. Isolated very heavy rainfall also very likely over Goa during 24th – 26th; madhya Maharashtra on 25th & 26th August,” the weather office said in its forecast.

Several northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to receive heavy rainfall during the next seven days. “Isolated very heavy rainfall also very likely over Assam and Meghalaya on 21st and 24th; Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on 21st – 25th August,” the Met department said.

Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand are also expected to be lashed by rainfall till August 24 while West Bengal, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh may witness heavy downpour till August 23, according to IMD.
