A massive landslide occurred in East Sikkim on Tuesday morning. Due to this, a power station in the state was almost completely destroyed. Minor landslides have been occurring here for the last few weeks. Due to this, the hill adjacent to the 510 MW power station was in danger. On Tuesday morning, a large part of the hill slid and the power station of the Teesta Stage 5 dam of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) was covered with debris. This incident took place at Balutar near Deepu Dara of Singtam in East Sikkim.

In the landslide captured in the video by local residents from a nearby hill, large boulders and debris are seen falling rapidly towards the powerhouse, causing a lot of damage. Fortunately, no one was injured or killed in the incident. The power station was evacuated a few days ago due to continuous landslides. In the video recorded by people working near the power station, it can be seen that a part of the rock is sliding and after some time a large part of it falls on top of the power station.

According to residents, the landslide that occurred around 7:00 am was possibly caused by the NHPC Teesta Stage V tunnel that passes beneath the area. According to local media reports, the landslide also damaged 17-18 houses, forcing 5-6 families to move to NHPC quarters for safety. Apart from residential damage, the power station in the area has also suffered extensive damage.

Let us tell you that in October 2023, a cloudburst occurred in Sikkim. Due to this, the Lhonak glacial lake overflowed and the Stage 5 dam became inactive. The cloudburst caused a severe flood, which washed away parts of the Teesta Dam in Chungthang, Sikkim’s largest hydropower project.
