Guwahati, July 25: Dismissing the NSCN-IM’s accusation of targeting minority Christians during the ethnic clashes between Kukis and Meiteis, Arambai Tengool stated that the characterization of it harboring hatred towards Christians is both inaccurate and misleading.

“We believe that the cultural identity and traditional beliefs of our communities are integral to our collective identity and must be safeguarded against any external influences that threaten their continuity,” said Laishram Robason, Arambai Tengool’s control room operator, in a statement.

On July 24, NSCN-IM labeled Arambai Tengool a militant group, despite it not being declared a banned organization by the government.

“Violent extremism as followed by Arambai Tenggol is a threat to peace and tolerance. It is, therefore, natural that NSCN should take a stand to guard the interest and safety of the Christians in Manipur, given the fact that Arambai Tenggol bears a strong hatred towards the Christians, both in spirit and action,” the Naga group said.

Countering the NSCN-IM’s statement, Arambai Tengool stated: “We firmly assert that the violence is, in fact, the aggression of Kuki refugees against the Meiteis, one of the indigenous people of Manipur.

The NSCN(I-M)’s characterization of the conflict overlooks the complex realities on the ground and misrepresents the nature of the aggression faced by the indigenous people of Manipur, especially the Meitei community.”

“The AT was compelled to defend the Meitei community against the backdrop of armed aggression by the Kuki refugees. Many dedicated members of AT have sacrificed their lives in this defense. Under such circumstances, it is extremely unfortunate for the NSCN-IM to label AT as a militant group. This mischaracterization overlooks our true mission and our members’ sacrifices to protect our community and cultural heritage,” the statement added.

“While we respect all religions and the right to religious practices, we stand firmly against any form of covert and overt conversion that seeks to undermine or destroy the cultural and religious heritage of the indigenous people of Manipur,” it continued.

The statement also claimed that through various initiatives and community engagements, Arambai Tengool strives to foster a deep appreciation for cultural roots and encourages younger generations to take pride in their heritage. It collaborates with local communities, cultural practitioners, and scholars to document, celebrate, and revitalize traditional practices, ensuring they remain vibrant and relevant in the modern world.

“Our commitment to creating a strong, unified voice for the Indigenous people of Manipur, advocating for their rights, and promoting the preservation of their unique cultural legacy. By doing so, we aim to contribute to a diverse and culturally rich society where the heritage of every community is valued and protected,” it added.
