New Delhi: Amid the country wide protests over the recent rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in Kolkata, another case has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district. A 14-year-old girl, a student of Class 8, has died after allegedly being raped by her teacher.

The victim hails from a village in Duddhi within Sonbhadra. She succumbed to her injuries late on Tuesday night at Banaras Hindu University Hospital in Varanasi, where she had been undergoing treatment for 20 days. The suspect, identified as Vishambar, who worked as a sports instructor at the girl’s school, is currently at large.

Kolkata Rape Case, Doctors Strike LIVE

Victim lured under false pretext

The victim’s family said that Vishambar had summoned her under the pretext of participating in a sports event on December 30 of last year. However, he allegedly took her to his house and committed the crime. Feaing the societal stigma, the girl kept the ordeal to herself and her health began to deteriorate in the next weeks.

In an attempt to improve her condition, the family sent her to Chhattisgarh to stay with relatives, but her health showed no signs of improvement. It was only then that she confided in her aunt, revealing the horrific incident, which led to her hospitalisation.

Accused tried to bribe family

The family also said that the accused had tried to buy their silence with a sum of Rs 30,000. Initially, they refrained from contacting authorities due to fear of public shame, but as the girl’s condition worsened, her father filed a police complaint on July 10. Subsequently, a case was registered against Vishambar, a resident of Ballia in Uttar Pradesh. Police has charged Vishambar under the POCSO Act and has mobilised two teams in an effort to arrest him. “The accused will be arrested soon,” said a senior police officer on Tuesday.

This incident has added fuel to the ongoing outrage sparked by the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her semi-naked body was found in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital last week, further igniting national outrage.
