Bhagalpur: A segment of the four-lane bridge under construction on the Sultanganj-Aguwani Ganga route in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district collapsed into the Ganga river for the third time on Saturday.

The section between pillars nine and ten, which extends from Sultanganj to Agwani Ghat in Bhagalpur, plunged into the river, prompting concerns about the project’s structural integrity.

Khagaria’s District Magistrate, Amit Kumar Pandey, informed the press, “The entire faulty structure of the bridge under construction is slated for dismantling by the contractor, as per the Patna High Court’s direction. The construction has already ceased at the site.” He confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident.

The SP Singla Construction Company, responsible for the construction of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge over the Ganga, has seen the bridge collapse three times, despite an investment of Rs 1717 crore.

The Mahasetu, a significant infrastructure endeavour by SP Singla Company, aims to link the districts of Khagaria and Bhagalpur. Yet, the recurrent collapses have led to a review of the construction methodology and the implemented safety protocols.

The bridge’s construction was put on hold temporarily due to the Ganga’s flood conditions, which compounded the difficulties of erecting the structure over the river.

Initiated in 2014, the Aguwani-Sultanganj Ganga bridge project has missed its completion deadline eight times. Additionally, the bridge incurred damage in April 2022 during a storm.

These consistent failures have sounded the alarm and instigated demands for an inquiry to ascertain the reasons behind the collapses and to guarantee the security of ongoing and future construction projects.
