Chennai is getting ready to own its biggest eco-park soon.

Chennai: Restoration of the 52-hectare Kadapakkam Lake near Manali in North Chennai has begun, with Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurating the project. The initiative aims to double the lake’s capacity from 1.1 MCM to 2.2 MCM, improving water storage. The project also includes recreational spaces like a butterfly park, bird island, and play area, enhancing the area’s ecological value.

The 55-hectare Kadapakkam Lake is set to undergo an Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) transformation to enhance climate resilience. It will enhance flood retention,boost water storage through desilting, and create inclusive recreational space, that’s accessible to all.

Additionally, the restoration will also boost lake’s water holding capacity from 1.1 million cubic metres to 2.2.

It is to be noted that, the Asian Development Bank has provided an additional $6.8 million grant to Chennai for the construction of a bird island and two hectares of forest at Manali’s Kadapakkam Lake.

In the restoration work of Kadappakkam lake, the lake has been dredged, deepened, widened, the bank of the lake has been raised and the capacity of the lake has been tripled.The reconstruction work will include repairing sluices, improving biodiversity habitats for public use, creating green gardens and footpaths on the banks of the lake. Also, due to the restoration work of Kadapakkam lake, rainwater stagnation in the surrounding areas of the lake will be avoided. Moreover, the reconstruction of the Kadappakkam lake will provide regular irrigation to the nearby agricultural lands, according to officials.
