Calcutta High Court condemns mob attack at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College during protest

The Calcutta High Court condemned the mob attack at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College during a midnight protest, calling it an “absolute failure of state machinery.” The court questioned the renovation at the crime scene and warned of potential hospital closure if necessary.

During the proceedings, the counsel for state claimed tear gas was fired, 15 police personnel were injured, the DCP also suffered serious injuries and police vehicles were damaged. However, the place of occurrence is protected.

The court asked how did police intelligence wing failed to get information about the large mob gathering near the hospital.

Normally the police always has an intelligence wing. Similar things happened on Hanuman Jayanti. If 7,000 people are to gather, it is hard to believe the state police did not know,” wondered the HC.

“If police can’t protect their own men, how will they protect doctors,” said the court.

The investigation is proceeding with a special team by the CBI who is aware of the incident. In our view, the police should place on record the entire sequence of events leading to the incident. What is more important is that the doctors working in the hospital who are presently protesting have to be given adequate protection to discharge their duties,” observed the court.
