New Delhi: At the stroke of midnight as India prepared to usher in Independence Day, thousands of women as well as men across West Bengal and the country hit the roads and went on a warpath to show their angst against the ghastly and barbaric rape-murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

    Vandalism at RG Kar post-midnight protest against Kolkata doctor rape-murder

    The vandalism took place as the ‘Reclaim the nights’ protest rallies seeking justice for the brutal rape and murder of a young PGT doctor converged at the hospital from various parts of the city. Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been pulled in to disperse the protestors. RAF personnel have been injured during the stone pelting by the protestors.

    Violence erupted at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata as an angry mob entered hospital premises and vandalised vehicles. There was a huge crowd outside the hospital protesting and then the barricade was broken and vehicles inside the hospital premises were vandalised. A sudden mob which appeared at the protest side also mishandled the doctors posted at the RG Kar hospitals.  A police team posted at the hospital overnight was overpowered by the mob.

    ‘A new freedom struggle begins tonight,’ Rimjhim wrote

    In her post, Rimjhim asked people to join her near a bus stand in Jadavpur. The call went far and wide — from one location to 300 and from one city to several. It is not only women who participated in the protests, but men too.

    “Tonight is the night of freedom of women of women inside and outside West Bengal. A new freedom struggle begins tonight,” Rimjhim wrote. Earlier, a poster, showing a red hand holding a crescent moon in the background of a night sky, had also gone viral on social media.

    Who gave the call for protests?

    Researcher Rimjhim Sinha made the first call to this campaign. In a Facebook post, she wrote, “I have heard that Principal of RG Kar has said the doctor should not have wandered alone at night. I will be outside at 11.55 pm for my freedom. I will do what I want. I am not ready to listen to ‘night is not safe for women’, ‘the dress is not safe’ and ‘the women does not have a good character’. I will spend the night outdoors.”
