Airport to foster enhanced connectivity for the Mumbai region

The NMIA, which aims to alleviate the congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, has been one of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects in India. Located in the Raigad district, the airport is expected to serve as a vital hub for both domestic and international travel, significantly boosting the region’s connectivity.

Several safety checks to be conducted SOON!

According to officials, the trial landing will involve a series of rigorous tests to assess the airport’s readiness, including runway performance, air traffic control systems, and ground support operations. These trials will be crucial in identifying any issues that need to be addressed before the airport can begin regular operations.

Airport to get fully operational by March 2025

Once the trial phase is completed, the NMIA is on track to be fully operational by March 2025. The new airport is expected to handle up to 10 million passengers annually in its initial phase, with plans to expand its capacity in the future. The project has faced multiple delays due to land acquisition challenges, environmental concerns, and the COVID-19 pandemic, but recent developments indicate that the project is back on track.

GVK Group, the company responsible for the development of the NMIA, has expressed confidence that the airport will become a major aviation hub in the region. The airport’s strategic location, coupled with state-of-the-art facilities, is expected to attract significant airline traffic and contribute to the economic growth of Navi Mumbai and its surrounding areas.

Project Planning and Approval (2007-2015):

  • The idea for a new airport in Navi Mumbai was first proposed in 1997, but it gained momentum in the 2000s.
  • The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra, the nodal agency for the project, prepared the initial plans.
  • Environmental clearances, land acquisition, and approval from various regulatory bodies were obtained during this period.
  • In 2014, GVK-led Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) won the bid to develop and operate the airport.

Land Acquisition and Preparation (2016-2019):

  • Land acquisition for the airport site, located in the Panvel area of Navi Mumbai, involved relocating several villages and residents.
  • The land was prepared for construction, including leveling and reclamation of marshy areas.
  • Start of Construction (2019-2022):
  • The foundation stone was laid in 2018, and construction began in 2019.
  • This phase involved the construction of basic infrastructure, including runways, taxiways, terminal buildings, and other essential facilities.

Phase 2: Operationalization and Expansion

Operational Readiness (2022-2024):

  • By this phase, the airport is expected to handle a limited number of flights as part of its operational readiness trials.
  • The construction of the first terminal (Terminal 1) and other essential infrastructure, such as the main runway, is prioritised.
  • The airport’s connectivity with road and rail networks is also developed during this period.

Initial Operations (2024 Onwards):

  • The airport is expected to start commercial operations with an initial capacity of handling around 10 million passengers annually.
  • Cargo facilities, parking, and other ancillary services are also developed during this phase.

Capacity Expansion (2024-2030):

  • As demand grows, additional terminals and a second runway will be constructed to increase the airport’s capacity.
  • The airport is planned to eventually handle 60 million passengers annually.
  • Further development of commercial and cargo infrastructure will support increased air traffic and economic activity in the region.

Full-scale Operations (Post-2030):

  • By the end of this phase, the airport will be fully operational with all planned terminals, runways, and supporting infrastructure.
  • It will serve as a major hub for international and domestic flights, significantly easing the load on the existing Mumbai airport.
