Project worth over Rs 376 crore sanctioned for Nagaland so far under PM-DevINE

A total of four projects with a sanctioned cost of Rs 376.87 crore have been allocated  for Nagaland under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) scheme since its inception in October 2022. 

Data provided by the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on August 1 informed that the highest sanction was accorded in 2022-23 financial year (FY) at Rs 180 crore concerning ‘Livelihood projects relating to Special Development of Eastern Nagaland.’ It is expected to be completed by December 2025. 

Further in 2023-24 FY, an amount of Rs 132.37 crore was allocated for ‘Construction of 220/132 kV (2×100 MVA) & 132/33 kV (2×50 MVA) Sub-station at Tsitrongse-Dimapur with Associated lines’ with completion timeline of October 16, 2023. 

For the current fiscal (2024-25), a sum of Rs 64.5 crore was allocated for two projects – ‘Upgradation of the Radiation Oncology Centre at Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research’ worth Rs 34.50 crore and ‘Educational Infrastructure/ facility  Development in Polytechnics’ worth Rs 30 crore. 

The works for the two projects are yet to be awarded, informed the data provided by the Minister of State, DoNER Dr Sukanta Majumdar.
Overall, since its inception, 31 projects worth Rs 4502.46 crore have been sanctioned in the North-East under the PM-DevINE scheme up to July 24, 2024, he stated. 

Out of these 31 projects, two projects worth Rs121.21 crore have already been completed.  The year-wise budget allocation stood at  Rs 400 crore in  2022-23; Rs 2200 crore in 2023-24 and Rs Rs 856.24 in 2024-25.

As on 24.07.2024, no ongoing PM-DevINE project is delayed, the MoS added. 

At Rs 1402 crore, Assam has the highest allocation so far under the scheme, followed by Rs 600 crore in Mizoram.  Tripura was third at Rs 561 crore for 4 projects.

What is PM-DevINE? 
The Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) was announced as a new Central Sector scheme with 100% Central funding in the Union Budget 2022-23. 

It was approved by the Union Cabinet on 12 October, 2022 with a total outlay of Rs 6,600 crore for the 4-year period from 2022-23 to 2025-26 and aimed at rapid and holistic development of NE region by funding infrastructure and social development projects based on the felt needs of the States.

The objectives of PM-DevINE scheme are to: (i) fund infrastructure convergently, in the spirit of PM GatiShakti; (ii) support social development projects based on felt needs of the NER; (iii) enable livelihood activities for youth and women; and (iv) fill the development gaps in various sectors.
