Emphasising that “casinos are not part of the state’s culture” and “Goans are suffering due to it”, Opposition leader Yuri Alemao sought an end to such operations in the state.

“Casino is a curse to Goa. This is a very serious thing. The state has earned a dubious reputation due to casinos. How are you going to change it? One fellow was saying he is going to change it in 100 days (after he gets elected). I don’t know what happened after that. When you shift to the other side, everything changes,”he said.

He also said that the state government is yet to recover Rs 349 crore as dues from the casinos. “Write to them and recover the money,” said Alemao.

He said that the government should initiate stern action against slot machines operators, stating that “many people have lost their hard-earned money”.

He also said that the mastermind behind these slot machines operates from Fatorda. “One ‘don’ is the operator in Goa and his headquarters is in Fatorda. But no action is being taken,” said Alemao.

He said that the government needs to seriously look into the shifting of offshore casinos.

“Will you relocate them or still grant more extensions?” questioned Alemao.
