The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, spanning 82.15 km from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, marks India’s first RRTS project. Once operational, the RRTS is poised to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to less than an hour. The corridor is strategically designed with stations spaced every 5 to 10 kilometres, ensuring optimal connectivity. 

Significant strides are being made in the development of Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor, with completed viaducts and the final stages of construction for underground stations. Currently, the Namo Bharat trains are operational on the initial 34 km stretch from Sahibabad to Modi Nagar North, serving eight stations. The upcoming 8 km extension from Modi Nagar North to Meerut South will extend the operational route to 42 km, encompassing nine RRTS stations. 

NCRTC has announced that the 25 km stretch from Sahibabad to Meerut South will be operational by March 2024. Additionally, the 16.60 km section from Sarai Kale Khan to Sahibabad is expected to become operational by the end of 2024.

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridors: Phase-wise construction update

Phase 1, connecting Sahibabad to Duhai Depot, was completed in October 2023, facilitating improved transit options. Phase 2, from Duhai Depot to Meerut South, is slated for partial completion by March 2024. Phase 3 involves the construction of the segment from Sarai Kale Khan to Sahibabad, with an expected completion date by December 2024. Phase 4, spanning from Meerut South to Modipuram Depot, is currently under construction and projected to be operational by June 2025.

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridors: Name of stations and construction progress 

Sarai Kale Khan – NCRTC stated that Sarai Kale Khan station will boast the largest parking facility in Delhi and the second largest across the entire train network. At Sarai Kale Khan station, there will be parking space for 275 cars and 900 two-wheelers. 

New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar – The Delhi segment of the RRTS corridor covers 14 km, consisting of 9 km elevated and 5 km underground sections, which include the ongoing construction of Anand Vihar Station. Viaduct construction in Delhi is finished, with three stations under construction nearing completion. The Anand Vihar RRTS station at the concourse level connects seamlessly with both the Blue and Pink Lines of the Delhi Metro.

Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai (EPE), Murad Nagar, Modi Nagar South and Modi Nagar North – The Namo Bharat train has commenced operations on a 34 km corridor, connecting eight stations from Sahibabad to Modi Nagar North.

Meerut South – Construction has been completed, and Namo Bharat trains will soon commence operations. Meerut South station is equipped with three platforms: two designated for Namo Bharat trains and one for the Meerut Metro. The largest parking area is located at Meerut South station, with capacity for approximately 300 cars and 900 two-wheelers. 

Partapur, Rithani, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahmapuri, Meerut Central, Bhaisali, Begum Pul, MES Colony, Daurli, Meerut North, Modipuram – Meerut South to Modipuram Depot is currently under construction with an expected operational date set for June 2025.

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS: Parking spaces for over 8,000 vehicles

NCRTC announced intentions to allocate parking spaces for more than 8,000 vehicles at stations along the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). This initiative includes provisions for over 1,600 cars and 6,500 two-wheelers across the 25 stations.

The initial 10 minutes of parking will be complimentary for drop-offs and pick-ups. Thereafter, the fees are structured as follows: Rs 5 for bicycles, Rs 10 for two-wheelers, and Rs 25 for cars for up to six hours. For durations between six to 12 hours, charges are Rs 5 for bicycles, Rs 25 for two-wheelers, and Rs 50 for cars. Beyond 12 hours, the rates increase to Rs 10 for bicycles, Rs 30 for two-wheelers, and Rs 100 for cars. Night parking during non-operational hours will incur charges of Rs 20 for bicycles, Rs 60 for two-wheelers, and Rs 200 for cars.

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS: Last mile connectivity transport

Passengers using the Delhi-Meerut RRTS can now access rental bikes, bicycles, and feeder buses from stations to enhance their last-mile connectivity. According to multiple media reports, NCRTC has partnered with various state and private providers of last-mile connectivity for this initiative. 

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS: Electric charging stations 

NCRTC first Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station at Sahibabad RRTS station in Ghaziabad has been made operational. According to reports, NCRTC is going to promote installation of charging stations for electric vehicles at all RRTS stations.

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS: Design, features and more

Designed for a maximum speed of 180 kmph, the RRTS operates at a speed of 160 kmph on average. The track gauge follows the standard gauge of 1435 mm. The rolling stock comprises aerodynamic coaches measuring 3.2 m wide and 22 m long, constructed from stainless steel and aluminum. Alstom is set to supply 210 coaches for the Delhi-Meerut line. 

The signaling system employs European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 of ERTMS, ensuring efficient and safe operations. Traction is provided through a 1 x 25 KV AC overhead catenary (OHE). Seating arrangements feature transverse setups, catering to both Economy and Business classes with one coach designated for Business class per train.

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS: Ticket Fare Prices

Regarding the fare of Delhi-Meerut RRTS, there’s a distinction between standard and premium class tickets, with prices varying depending on the journey’s length and the class chosen. Ticket prices between specific stations such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot range from Rs 20 to Rs 50 for standard class and Rs 40 to Rs 100 for premium class.
