Massive clouds in Chennai coasts and expecting a heavy rain to follow

Chennai: Chennaiites started Wednesday morning with cold, wet conditions, as late-night heavy rains lashed the city one more day. The widespread rain affected several parts of the city overnight, including Egmore, Purasaiwalkam, Guindy, Anna Nagar, and Chetpet. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), forecasted that this weather will persist for the next three hours and rain is expected to spread across 16 districts, including Chennai for the next two days.

16 districts to receive heavy showers for the next two days

“A zonal low circulation prevails over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. Due to this, rain is likely in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, and other districts. Heavy rain is likely in 9 districts of Tamil Nadu including Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Cuddalore,” the Meteorological Department said.

The districts likely to see moderate rainfall are Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri, Salem, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai.

The MeT department noted that a tropical cyclone is prevailing over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. Light to moderate rain with thunder, lightning, and gusty winds (speed 30 – 40 kmph) may occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puduvai, and Karaikal today due to changes in the speed of westerly winds.

Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai districts and Puducherry and Karaikal regions are likely to receive heavy rain at one or two places.

Similarly, Light to moderate rain with thunder, lightning, and gusty winds (speed of 30 – 40 kmph) may occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puduwai, and Karaikal. Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Trichy, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai districts, and Karaikal regions are likely to experience heavy rain, according to RMC’s forecast.

Weather forecast for Chennai and suburbs

Due to variations in westerly wind speeds, Chennai and nearby suburbs are expected to experience light to moderate rain, with possible thunder and lightning, over the next 48 hours.

The sky will remain partly cloudy for the next 24 hours. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely to occur over a few parts of the city. The maximum temperature will be around 35° Celsius and the minimum temperature will be around 27-28° Celsius.
