94-year-old Mumbai Central station to undergo renovation

Mumbai Central Terminus station will complete 100 years in the coming six years. Due to which, the station will be renovated at an estimated cost of ₹1,500 crore. As per the plan drawn up by the Rail Land Development Authority, the 32.5 acre area near the station will be redeveloped. 

Suburban Railway offices, rest houses, meeting halls and other facilities currently located near the station will be shifted to Grant Road and Mahalakshmi. Mumbai Central is the second station in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region which is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. It will be renovated as well. CSTM was also renovated by RLDA at a cost of INR 2,450 crore.

The upgrade will transform the station premises into a vibrant hub equipped to handle more than 650,000 daily passengers by 2065. It will include separate plazas for passenger and parcel entry/exit, connectivity to other modes of public transport like metro and taxis. There will be a shopping mall and refreshment zone as well.

The office of the Divisional Railway Manager of the Western Railway, in a six-storey building, will be housed in the 19th-century Parcel Depot at Grant Road, spread over 0.68 hectares and currently used by the Railway Police. Besides this, another 1 hectare plot is also likely to be commercialised, sources said. The remaining offices and assets in the six-storey building will be shifted to Mahalakshmi near the railway yard.
