8-Year Old Spins in Grand Canyon Rapids On Purpose

New Record Set for Youngest Ever to Kayak Through the Grand Canyon

Normally if you heard of children ages 8 and 10 floating in kayaks somewhere in the Grand Canyon you would grow concerned. Not when it is Azalea and Wylie Burnham from Reno Nevada. The two navigated the 280-mile route down the Colorado River recently and set a record for the youngest to ever do it.

It took them 18 days to make the trip while dealing with heat and days of rain. They made their way through the treacherous rapids that are known to capsize boats of adventurers. The two have been kayaking since they could walk and trained extensively for the trip.

Original Expeditions Went Through a Lot More Drama

Are people smirking at John Wesley Powell in the afterlife? He’s up there trying to tell his story of barely escaping the expedition through the Grand Canyon back in 1869 and those listening start to drift away rolling their eyes.

To be fair, the accomplishment of the Burnham siblings does not lessen Powell’s accomplishments. If anything, it is more impressive to see what these young kids did. I spent the summer lying on my back in my pool while they were battling the forces of nature.

Azalea and Wylie paddled up to 20-miles a day during their trek. They described to a Reno Television station how accomplished they feel after the trek. I would expect some great things from these two in the future.
