The hiring landscape for fresh graduates is improving, with nearly 72% of employers planning to recruit freshers between July and December 2024, according to TeamLease EdTech’s Career Outlook Report. This marks a slight 4% increase compared to the first half of 2024 and a notable 7% rise over the same period in 2023.

According to the report, e-commerce & tech startups, engineering & infrastructure, and retail are the top three industries actively seeking fresh talent, with 61%, 59%, and 54% of employers in these sectors planning to recruit freshers, respectively. Among cities, Bangalore takes the lead with 74% of employers intending to hire fresh graduates, followed by Mumbai at 60% and Chennai at 54%.

Experts said that contrary to widespread concerns about joblessness and unemployability among fresh graduates, the report indicates a positive trend in employers’ hiring intentions. “The job market is evolving rapidly with technology and digital skills taking centre stage. We are seeing a clear demand for roles that blend technical expertise with creative problem-solving. The real game-changer is the growing recognition of the need for stronger industry-academia partnerships. It is an exciting time for both freshers and employers as we bridge the gap between education and industry requirements,” said Shantanu Rooj, founder and CEO of TeamLease EdTech.

The report said that the job roles for freshers that are high in demand include full stack developer, SEO (search engine optimisation) executive, digital sales associate, and UI/UX designer. “The employers are particularly seeking candidates with skills in cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analytics, and SEO,” it adds.

The importance of industry-academia collaboration is growing with 70% of employers suggesting enhancing curriculum with experiential learning, while 62% advocate for industry-academia partnerships to better align academic training with industry needs. In addition, degree apprenticeships continue to depict stable demand with manufacturing leading where 25% of the employers planning to hire degree apprentices, followed by engineering & infrastructure at 19%, and construction & real estate at 11%.

“During my interactions with university leaders, I have been asked how should universities plan their course catalogues and curriculum. This report is an attempt to help higher education institutions get some insights into the minds of employers. It suggests several in-demand courses that can significantly boost employability. The certifications in financial planning, graphic design, digital marketing, and data science are among the top recommendations,” said Rooj.
