4 Manipur cops held for looting arms from BJP MLA’s farmhouse

Four Manipur police personnel and another individual have been arrested in connection with an arms snatching incident that allegedly took place on Tuesday night at Sekmai Leikinthabi in West Imphal district.

The incident took place in the farmhouse of BJP MLA Joykishan Singh when miscreants overpowered three village defence force (VDF) personnel who were guarding the farmhouse and snatched three SLR rifles and four loaded magazines containing 80 live rounds of ammunition.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Meisnam Krishnadas, Maibam Shanjit Singh, Longjam Jayenta Singh, Oinam Banti Singh and Mainam Bomcha, who is a caretaker at the farmhouse.

Police said a case was registered at Sekmai police station, and the accused have been remanded to 10 days of custody for questioning.

Manipur police posted on X: “In follow-up to the above incident, on August 28, in a major operation by the Manipur Police, the following arms and ammunition were recovered at Sekta Awang Leikai, Imphal East – three INSAS Rifles along with three magazines, one S Calibre Rifle along with magazine, one INSAS LMG Rifle along with magazine, two AK-56 Rifles along with two magazines, 130 live ammunition rounds, two mobile phones and nine miscellaneous items including military fatigues from Sekta Awang Leikai, Imphal East District.”

Manipur has witnessed repeated incidents of arms being looted since May 3 last year. At least 226 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.In March this year, chief minister N Biren Singh said that an extensive audit was conducted on May 15 last year through the joint efforts of the police, Indian Army, Assam Rifles and other paramilitary forces. Singh said they had successfully recovered 1,757 arms and 22,707 ammunition from the approximately 5,600 arms and 6.5 lakh rounds looted from the Manipur police armoury during the initial days of the violence.
