The 34th Nagaland State Taekwondo Championship 2024 commenced today at Phek town with the participation of 340 players from different districts including Department of Youth Resources & Sports (DYRS) team.

Gracing the inaugural ceremony as the special guest, KG Kenye, Minister for Power & Parliamentary Affairs commended the state Taekwondo players for bringing laurel to the state on several occasions at the national and international level.

He urged upon the players to compete in healthy way and continue to perform well.

The minister said that the state government is trying its best to mobilize resources for sports infrastructure development in the state

Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, MLA & Leader of NPF Legislature Party also expressed satisfaction over the excellent performance of Taekwondo in Nagaland.

Nagas are second to none in sports, he said and encouraged the players to put God first in their hunt for excellence.

Azo also told the players to maintain consistency to yield greater success.

Later, he submitted a representation to DYRS Nagaland for construction of multi disciplinary indoor sports hall at Phek town.

Kethosituo Sekhose, Director, Youth Resources & Sports, Nagaland thanked Nagaland’s Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Youth Resources & Sports advisor S. Keoshu Yimkhiung for transforming the state’s sports ecosystem.

He said that the state government has been putting its best effort to place the basic sports infrastructure to every corner of the state.

The championship is hosted by Phek District Taekwondo Association (PDTA) and organized by Nagaland Taekwondo Association (NTA) in collaboration with Department of Youth Resource & Sports (DYRS), Nagaland.

Earlier, greeting was shared by Nezosa Tetseo, president Phek District Sports Association while PDTA president Nuyi Hoshi delivered welcome address.

The function was chaired by Seyieveto Lohe, councillor Phek Town Committee.

Meanwhile, Phek Deputy Commissioner John Tsulise Sangtam will be the valedictory guest on September 3.

‘Taekwondo gaining more popularity in Nagaland’
Nagaland Taekwondo Association (NTA) president Pele Khezhie said “initially, when taekwondo started in Nagaland there was a poor response from the people, partly because of negligence and knowledge about the importance of taekwondo.”

He expressed happiness that, today, taekwondo is gaining more and more popularity in Nagaland.

“In our present day, Taekwondo is not just a mere sport but it has also become a necessity and because of which many schools have included taekwondo in their curriculum to educate children about basic self-defence and also instil morals like discipline,” he said.

The government has also initiated a program for teachers to learn taekwondo so that they may be able to train themselves as well as teach their students, Khezhie said.

Maintaining that Phek district has huge potential for the promotion of Taekwondo, he was hopeful that players from Phek district will be bringing medals in the national and even international championship.

Thanking the Department of Youth Resources & sports, Nagaland for being a part of the championship, he said “This is for the first time in the history of Nagaland Taekwondo that the Department have collaborated with the Association to organise this Championship.”

He hoped that taekwondo will reach new heights through such collaboration

Stating that Theja Keretsu and Moon Thapa had recently took part in the International Taekwondo Master Course in Jharkhand, Khezhie said “Now, we also have internationally qualified technical personnel in our state.”

“I am hopeful that in days to come, Nagaland taekwondo will also be at par with other international countries bringing laurels to our humble state and also the country as a whole,” he said.

Thanking everyone for their support, he hoped that the younger generations will take taekwondo sport further and higher than ever before.
