Hyderabad also became the first city in India to install pelican signals.

30 pelican signals were launched across the city on Thursday for the sake of pedestrian safety after Police Commissioner CV Anand inaugurated one at Tank Bund along Hussain Sagar lake.

The signals, funded under Safe City Project will help in easing pedestrian woes and will be operated by trained traffic volunteers.

“The signals allow pedestrians to cross roads other than intersections and will be operated manually by the volunteers and will give a time of 15-20 seconds for the pedestrian to cross road safely by turning the vehicular traffic signal red in both directions,” CV Anand said. The system will also improve accessibility for differently abled people and increase crosswalk visibility to drivers and regulate flow of traffic.

To foster accountability in law enforcement, 100 worn body cameras have been issued to field level traffic officers, the police commissioner said.

Hyderabad also became the first city in India to install pelican signals as 94 signals were sanctioned by the government early last year and 30 of them were operationalised today.
