A three day long 20th Nagaland State Chess Championship 2024 under the aegis of Nagaland Chess Association (NCA) got underway here today at Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) office complex, Kohima.

76 players registered for the championship, which will continue till August 1.

68 years K. Sekhamo from Kohima district is the oldest player and Reku Haikam from Peren district as the youngest player.

In Open Category, the champion will be awarded with Rs. 30,000 while the second and third place winners will pocket Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively.

4th place will receive Rs. 7000 while 5th to 10 position will get Rs. 4000 each.

Top four players will represent Nagaland at the forthcoming National Chess championship at Haryana from August 17-27.

Prizes for both Under 18 and Under-14 has been set as ; 1st- Rs. 5000, 2nd- Rs. 3000, 3rd- Rs. 2000, 4th – Rs. 1500 and 5th- Rs. 1000.

Best female player will receive Rs. 5000 while best veteran (60+year) will get Rs. 5000.

Best player below 7 years will be awarded with Rs. 1000 along with trophy.

Earlier, NCA vice president P. Khezhie made an introductory speech while players meeting was led by Mughaho Awomi, honorary secretary NCA. The inaugural function was compered by Sulivi Assumi.
