Row over series of train accidents

The latest train mishap comes weeks after 18 coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail passenger train derailed in Jharkhand, killing at least two passengers and injuring more than a dozen others. Last month, 12 coaches of Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, killing two people and injuring over 20.

Earlier in June, a goods train crashed into the Kanchanjunga Express near New Jalpaiguri, leaving 10 people dead, dozens others injured. The express train was travelling from Agartala in Tripura to Sealdah in Kolkata. The loco pilot of the goods train and two other railway staff were among those killed in the tragedy.

The Opposition recently attacked the Centre over a series of train accidents. Earlier this month, Ashwini Vaishnaw accused the Opposition of amplifying small incidents on the railway network through its “social media troll army” to create fear among its two crore-plus passengers.

Vaishnaw hit out at the previous Congress governments for ignoring the safety aspects of the vast railway network by delaying the implementation of the automatic train protection system and also took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for making reels with loco pilots. “Hum reel banane wale log nahi, mehnat karne wale log hai (we are not the ones who make reels, but work with dedication),” he had said.
